This is the work which was done as a drawing for the album in 1970: ”Decorator Malygin”.

The idea was that we are looking into the centre, but we are afraid to stand in the centre. It is always safer to be on the edge of life. Then you are invisible and therefore less vulnerable.

Also, in the seventies, Ilya Kabakov was working with the idea of white, not only as an emptiness and flat surface on the page or on canvas, but something full of images, of meaning, if you look “inside“ of it. White as a well of subconscious images, cosmos into which we can immerse ourselves.

They are looking down was donated in memoria of the exhibition Where is our place?, 2003.
