Maria Morganti, Painting for the Nineteenth century Room, oil on canvas, 2008

The painting was conceived for the exhibition Diario cromatico, held at the Museum in 2008 and was progressively constructed after repeated and continuous visits to the collection.

Taking as her starting point objects and paintings from the XIXth century room the artist gathered colours and took their memory to her studio then created, layer upon layer, her work. This creative process is visible at the upper edge of her canvas where the history of the stratification has collected in thin stripes: a chromatic diary, the memory of the work. The largest area is the most visible, which is the sum of all of the stages, the accumulation of the experience.

Morganti, speaking of her work says: “I find the colour, I don’t make it. I don’t invent it, I don’t plan it, I don’t reproduce it... I move towards it... I listen to it and I see it being created. I see its birth on the canvas. With this work I concentrated above all on the flower in the hair of the figure painted by Milesi which I saw as a palette on which the artist had worked out all of his colours...The place where the artist had cleaned his brushes”.
