From 08 to 11 May 2019

The Inuit Canadian collective presents a selection of movies.

For the Biennale Arte 2019, Canada chose as its representant Isuma, an artistic collective and first inuit Canadian production company, that creates video content aiming to preserve this culture and spreading it around the world. It’s the first time for Inuit art at the national pavilion, in the year of indigenous languages of United Nations.

Isuma was founded in 1990 by Paul Apak Angilirq, Norman Cohn e Zacharias Kunuk. The latter is the first aboriginal artist deemed eligible for a professional artistic grant in 1985.

In 2001, Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner won the Caméra d’Or as best first work at 54th Cannes Festival. It’s the first movie entirely told in Inuktitut language and directed by a native, Zacharias Kunuk.

This award made Isuma one of the most important indigenous production companies in the world. In Inuktitut language, Isuma means “to think”, “state of thoughtfulness”, to enhance the collective’s mission: to raise the awareness and to spread not only inuit but all aboriginal cultures.

The collective, lead by Zacharias Kunuk and Norman Cohn, presents a selection of works at Querini Stampalia Foundation:
