Marisa Merz

It does not match, yet it flourishes

1 June - 18 September 2011

curated by Chiara Bertola

In conjunction with the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale

This exhibition is the result of Marisa Merz's permanence in Venice in 2006 and it is located in the Querini's Museum with both old and recent works, tracing Marisa Merz's most recent artistic oeuvres. The exhibition consists of twenty pieces expressing the intimate and visionary characteristics of Merz's poetry, blending and confonding with the works of Querini Stampalia Museum's great masters of the past.

Drawings, various techniques on paper and plywood, painted raw clay and copper wire sculptures dialogue with other works in a revealing and impredictable way: from portraits to sacred conversations and mythological tales. The exhibition mainly shows Merz's most recent works, focused on pencil drawings on canvas or on cardboard using colored pencils or wax crayons. Her style is minimalist, sometimes evanescent. These drawing are often characterized by small cut out pieces placed elsewhere, handprints, drawing pins or paper clips, superimposed sheets of paper, pieces of adhesive tape, giving Merz's works a sense of fragility and temporariness. Moving according to logical universal order, Marisa Merz's work expresses the continuity of the artist’s work. It moves and evolves beyond temporal and spatial boundaries, as it is testimony to the meeting between old and contemporary art pieces of the Querini Stampalia Collection.

The exhibition was created thanks to the cooperation with Fondazione Merz in Turin, and has many sponsors like Pirelli & C. SpA, fuonder partner of Fondazione Hangar Bicocca.

Institutional partner in Veneto Region's project.

The exhibition is the second step of the project, from 16 May to 16 September 2012 at Fondazione Merz in Turin, Marisa Merz: to draw over and over again, thoughts as a changing name.
