The history of the Foundation is connected to the story of the Querini Stampalia family and in particular to its last descendant, Count Giovanni, who in 1868 left all his possessions to the city of Venice including his real estate, personal property, books and art collections.
His will stipulated the creation of an institution that would promote “studies and useful disciplines” and offer ample opening hours--specifically when the public libraries are closed, especially at night--to all visitors and scholars.
